Corneal Surgery Melbourne

Subspecialty corneal surgery including the full range of corneal transplantation techniques and management of corneal disease.

Transplant Procedures

Modern corneal transplantation has evolved significantly. Where possible, Dr MacIntyre uses targeted techniques that replace only the diseased layer of the cornea, resulting in faster recovery and superior outcomes.

DMEK
Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty

The most modern corneal transplant technique, transplanting only the innermost cell layer (15–20 microns). Results in faster recovery and better visual outcomes than older techniques.

DSAEK
Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty

Partial-thickness transplant replacing the back layers of the cornea. Well-established technique with excellent outcomes for endothelial disease.

PKP
Penetrating Keratoplasty (Full-Thickness Transplant)

Replacement of the full thickness of the central cornea. Indicated for conditions affecting all layers — including advanced keratoconus and corneal scarring.

DALK
Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty

Replaces the front layers of the cornea while preserving the patient's own endothelium. Preferred for keratoconus where the endothelium is healthy.
